Phillip Simpson

Phillip Simpson studied photography at the respected Wellington Polytechnic School of Design and Photography in the early 1990s, gaining a Diploma in Professional Photography, with distinction. He went on to make his name in London between 1995 and 2006, where he worked for some of the UK’s best known magazines and leading advertising agencies.

Phillip has returned to his native New Zealand with his young family and is enjoying applying his distinctive visual style to the New Zealand environment. Now signed to respected photographers’ agency The Collective Force, Phillip has recently been working for Colenso, Consortium, and DDB NZ.

Simpson is best known for creating contemporary images of people, within carefully considered locations and for his graphic landscape work. Drawing on documentary traditions and often described as ‘cinematic’, his pictures combine a sense of intrigue, with concise composition and a skillful mix of ambient and artificial lighting.

His last UK exhibition entitled ‘Glow’ explored the environment and community surrounding an English nuclear power station and was covered as a main feature in the British Journal of Photography. He was recently involved in organizing the latest ‘Headspace’ exhibition for the AIPA, of which he is Auckland Vice President.

Phil is an open and good-humored person, who enjoys working collaboratively with his clients and subjects.
