AIPA NEWS: OCTOBER 2006

The big news for the AIPA at the moment is the imminent publication of Workspace Volume 2: the premiere showcase for New Zealand commercial photography. As I write this the finishing touches are being made to the layout and design before the book heads off to the printer later this week. From what I’ve seen so far I can confidently say that this volume of Workspace is going to look absolutely ‘mint’ – both in terms of the images on display and the overall design. And as we’ve secured sponsorship from both the print company and paper supplier the final product will be truly exceptional.

Back in 2000 I wasn’t a member of the AIPA, so I missed out on a placement in the first edition of Workspace. I’ve been kicking myself ever since for not joining the Association sooner. But now I feel an enormous amount of satisfaction knowing that my work will be appearing in the new book alongside over 50 of New Zealand’s leading commercial photographers.

Over the last few years we’ve had an ever increasing number of enquiries from the creative sector asking for the latest version of Workspace, so I’m supremely confident that the new volume will be eagerly snapped up and used by the local advertising, design, and publishing communities. We’re also planning on distributing the book overseas – sending copies to key agencies and publishers in Australia, Asia, the UK and North America.

For those of you reading this now and thinking “damn, I missed out” well I’m afraid the only good news for you is that you shouldn’t have to wait quite as long for the next edition. Our plan is to publish a new Workspace book every two years, with our Headspace exhibitions occurring during the years in between.

So that means we will be having an AIPA Headspace exhibition next year. Obviously the specific details of the event have yet to be arranged, but I can tell you that it will be held in June so that it coincides with the Auckland Festival of Photography. As with all Headspace exhibitions the content will be restricted to personal work only - i.e. non-commissioned photography.

Before I sign off I would like to thank Jason and Phillippa Boa for inviting me to the Infocus awards dinner held in Christchurch last month. It was an entertaining evening and a great way to cap off an extremely well organised event. Congratulations to all of the participating photographers who managed to secure one or more of the 636 NZIPP awards. An excellent effort all round.
